Vegan Diets Are Healthier & Safer for Dogs

Prof. Andrew Knight studied over 2,500 dogs comparing conventional meat, raw meat, and vegan diets across 7 health indicators and 22 common disorders. Dogs fed vegan diets ranked among the healthiest overall. Raw-fed dogs carried significant pathogen risks — bacteria and parasites — not present in plant-based diets.

✔ 2,500+ dogs assessed across 7 health indicators and 22 common disorders

✔ Vegan dogs ranked among the healthiest of all diet groups

✔ Raw diets carry pathogen risks (bacteria, parasites) absent in plant-based diets

✔ “The healthiest and least hazardous diet for dogs is a nutritionally sound vegan diet” — Prof. Knight

The World's First Plant-Based Pet Food Company — Founded 1989

Eric Weisman is a graduate human physician with doctoral-level training in physiology, pathology, radiology, and nutrient applications for human disease. A practicing vegetarian for many years, he operated a home rescue shelter for cats, dogs, birds, and ferrets — and grew deeply concerned about the patterns of illness he observed in animals fed conventional commercial food.

In 1986, he began investigating pet food plants and rendering facilities firsthand. Inspired by his father, Paul Weisman, PharmD, and working with animal nutritionist Darwin Brightsman, PhD, he spent three years perfecting a formula built entirely on plant protein and plant oil — no rendering by-products, no chemical preservatives — that fully met NRC and AAFCO standards for all life stages.

In 1989, against the prevailing veterinary consensus, he launched Evolution Diet: the world's first organic, non-GMO, plant-protein-based cat and dog food. Today, independent peer-reviewed studies from the University of Guelph and Prof. Andrew Knight have validated what Eric observed in his own shelter more than 35 years ago.

Main Ingredients

Non-GMO and organic US and Canadian-grown ingredients go into Evolution Diet products. Plant ingredients are easily digestible and are not common allergens for cats or dogs.

What Do Vets Say?

Veterinarians knowledgeable in plant-protein nutrition recommend properly formulated plant-based products meeting AAFCO standards. All Evolution Diet products comply with AAFCO for growth and adult maintenance.

Taurine in Pet Diets

Dogs produce their own taurine from sulfur-containing amino acids. Cats cannot — they must get it from diet. All Evolution Diet products are formulated with taurine and are complete for all life stages.

Supporting Animal Welfare

Evolution Diet donates to organizations dedicated to saving animals, compassionate treatment of animals, spreading information about veganism, animal rights protection, and ethical research.
